Please provide your comments to my Camtasia presentation regarding Chapter 4 of The Skillful Teacher by Stephen Brookfield. http://www.screencast.com/t/VYXYLTZ0QV22
Questions to respond to:
1) What values do you consider to be an effective teacher?
2) Do you think the use of the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ) will provide valuable feedback in the course you currently teach? Is this a tool you utilize or would consider using in your current course?
I look forward to your comments.
Susan
Hi Susan - great presentation:)
ReplyDelete1. I value a teacher who is open and honest with the students. I also value a teacher that aligns their teaching pedagogy with that of the student-centered approach. An effective teacher must also display credibility and authenticity.
2. I am not currently using the CIQ; however, I do believe it can provide valuable feedback for the instructor. At this moment, I like using the muddiest point for evaluation.
Great presentation and kudos on getting the video from Dr. Brookfield - impressive :-)
ReplyDelete1. I believe engagement and transparency are necessary to be an effective teacher. You must stay engaged and available, especially in an online environment. Being transparent means be open about your expectations, how you will grade, explain why you have students do the course work, and "think out loud", role mode critical thinking and give rationales.
2. The CIQ can provide valuable information. I currently do not use it because I team teach. I am going to consider using as a online survey to give students after they complete in class activities to see what worked and what I can improve upon for the next semester.
Connie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments. I believe that many of us are new to the use of a tool like the CIQ, but I do think it may be helpful in certain courses or maybe some variation of this type of tool.
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteKudos for getting Dr. Brookfield to speak in your presentation!
To answer your first question on what I personally value in my teacher, I believe knowing that she cares and wants me to succeed are both important attributes. I really miss the face to face aspect of teaching and learning as I continue to pursue this online doctorate. Not being able to observe visual cues such as smiles, winks, or frowns make posting impersonal and non engaging. I also miss the auditory aspects of face to face as witnessed by my always asking y'all to call me. I value a teacher who acts like there is time for me even when I know we all are very busy. I try to be that teacher when students drop by my office and ask "Are you busy"? I have rehearsed the script, "No, thanks for giving me a reason to stop doing this"!
Question 2
I do not currently use the CIQ, but I would consider adopting an online version that is shorter. I would use the feedback to become a more skillful teacher!
Good job!
Thank you for your comments Gail. I think through Google hangouts we can still have those visual cues you were discussing. I too plan on using some form of tool to enhance my teaching.

1. Transparency and authenticity are important in my opinion. A couple of comments that struck me were students want to stay around after class that just being with the teacher they feel that they are learning new information. Another cord that struck home with me is how important it is to answer questions from students with clarity and confidence. I think that this is an area that I could become stronger with. I sometimes take too much time to understand where the student is coming from with their understanding before I clarify.
ReplyDelete2. I do see the CIQ as being beneficial. We may not always get the positive feedback we wish, however the feedback can be very beneficial.
Susan your presentation was excellent. How awesome to have Dr. Brookfield speak to our class via video. Also your voice is and the speed of your presentation was perfect. You have an excellent tone for audio presentation.
Thank you for you kind comments. I agree with your comments on clarity and feedback. I am realizing how important this is for our students.

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Connie, Kudos for contacting Dr. Brookfield.
I believe that consistency, credibility and authenticity are important characteristics to be an effective teacher. Students look for teachers that are fair and value their learning. These characteristics are displayed in and outside of the classroom.
I don't currently use a CIQ. I believe a CIQ is beneficial to teachers to improve their teaching experience and the learning experience for current and future students. I agree with Sally, we may not receive the results we want but we must be aware of the student's experience and perspective.
Also, I like the background of your blog!
Thank you for your comments. I do not believe anyone is actually using a form of the CIQ but we all see how it may provide feedback for our courses.

Susan,
ReplyDeleteGreat presentation. I will have to figure out how to use Camtasia. You guys make it look so easy :)
1. I think an effective teacher is one who is well versed in the content taught. A good teacher is open to questions, honest in response, and does what is necessary to get the students actively involved in the learning process.
2. I think the CIQ is valuable as an evaluation tool. It can help identify where you are in engaging students. Feedback received will help teachers to become better teachers.
Great job.
Roxanne
Thank you Roaxanne. I think we are all seeing how important timely feedback is regarding our student's learning. I am planning on trying a form of the CIQ next semester.

Excellent presentation, Susan. I think that transparency and engagement are caring acts in a teaching and learning environment. Since teachers are now facilitators, it is important to role model transparency and also to actively engage adult learners within a teaching and learning environment. The CIQ is an excellent tool that may help facilitators identify the engagement level of the participants. I plan on using it in the future.
